SOUTHERN OREGON SPEEDWAY is a tricky and unforgiving 3/8 mile high banked oval located on the outskirts of Medford, just shy of an hour from the Oregon/California border. Gorgeous, rugged scenery, big bright skies and sweltering summer heat greeted me on the two occasion I visited in 2024.
Southern Oregon Speedway hosts open wheel classes on a semi-regular basis with limited sprint cars making the most frequent appearances in 2025. 360 sprint cars will unfortunately not be back this year after the changeup to their Speedweek, however the mighty NARC 410’s return with the NW Focus Midgets for another Wild Wednesday on their road to Super Dirt Cup. In 2024 home state hero Tanner Holmes was awarded the NARC 410 victory, his career first, after the race was declared just prior to half distance.
ANGELIQUE BELL
When the NARC 410 Sprint Cars visited Southern Oregon in 2024 the feature was cut short at lap 13 after a horrific accident involving Angelique Bell. The California racer rode the wall in turn 3, becoming hung up in the catchfence cable and coming to rest perched on the wall and facing the wrong direction. Bell’s car was almost instantaneously engulfed in flames, the awkward positioning of the car only made extraction of the driver even more difficult. Though frantic, the terrifying scene seemed to move in slow motion, with safety officials eventually able to pull the injured racer from the wreckage with relatively minor injuries given the circumstances. The incident practically exhausted the available fire fighting resources, forcing officials and drivers to make a decision whether to complete the remaining 17 laps. After several competitors withdrew on safety grounds the declaration was agreed upon and Tanner Holmes was awarded the victory. Bell would spend several weeks in hospital, making a full recovery and returning to the drivers seat in October of 2024.
