Thunder on the Downs Brings $10K Double to Toowoomba
History and big money collide this weekend as Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway stages the fifth running of Thunder on the Downs, presented by Clay-Per-View. The two-night stand, which begins tonight (overnight Thursday for North America), pays $10,000-to-win each night and has already attracted a stellar field of more than 35 Sprint Cars according to official track sources.
Since debuting in 2021, only three names have graced victory lane — Luke Oldfield, Lockie McHugh, and Jamie Veal. Oldfield triumphed last season’s opener before rain claimed the finale, while McHugh and Veal have each earned multiple Thunder victories. The 2025 edition raises the question: can anyone break the streak?
Current nominations feature a blend of Queensland’s best and interstate firepower. Local aces Oldfield, Aaron Kelly, Dylan Menz, Brock Hallett, and Brent Kratzmann are joined by Jock Goodyer (TAS), Marcus Dumesny (NSW), Tate Frost (TAS), Mick Saller (NSW), Michael Stewart (ACT), Brendan Quinn (SA), and Harrison Swan (VIC). Lockie McHugh is entered for Friday only, adding intrigue to the weekend’s opener.
Thunder on the Downs has quickly become a highlight of the Queensland calendar. What started as a single-night experiment in 2021 grew into a three-race mini-series in 2023 before settling into its current two-night format. Each running has produced classic A-Mains, with car counts swelling from the mid-20s to more than 40 last year.
Nominations closed at noon Thursday Australian time; the final roster is expected to be released shortly.
