Dominic Scelzi made the most of a front row starting spot to claim win number one of 2025 in Saturday's 360 Sprint Car Challenge Tour event at Merced Speedway. The win came in just his second 360 Sprint Car race of the season, backing up a 2nd place run at Placerville in March. The win was Scelzi's first since October 26th last year at Hanford and catapults the fast-guy from Fresno into the series points lead.
At Merced on Saturday night (April 19), round two of the SCCT season saw forty-three 360 Sprint Cars sign in and it was Colby Copeland setting the early pace with overall qualifying quicktime at 11.591 seconds. Dominic Scelzi was able to salvage a decent qualifying run of 5th despite going out very late in group-A on a slowing track surface.
Scelzi, Tony Gomes, Ashton Torgerson and Tanner Carrick were heat race winners. Braden Chiaramonte run and won the dash from pole position but there was very little movement at the front of that race with all the shuffling done further back. Chiaramonte would fall back to finish in 12th in the feature but veteran front-row partner Scelzi wasn't about to let things slip away so easily. Clovis' Dominic Gorden went +4 to give Scelzi a run for the $3000 winners prize, ultimately falling just short. Tony Gomes maintained a second row start to complete the podium. Kaleb Montgomery continued to impress with a hard charger worthy +10 to finish 4th.
The Sprint Car Challenge Tour returns to the track for round 3 on Sunday May 25th at Marysville Raceway.
